West Texas and Carlsbad Caverns NM

I took a vacation through West Texas and New Mexico during March 2011 (Spring Break) and took along my (current) four favorite lenses: Panasonic 7-14mm and 20mm f1.7 and two Rokkor lenses, an MD 50mm F1.2 and a Rokkor 135mm F3.5.

Each lens has it’s purpose on my trips. The Panny 7-14mm lens is my wide angle lens that let’s me get those wide landscape shots and allows me to get “everything” in the shot without having to step way back from my subject.

The Panny 20mm is the perfect everyday/night lens, although I think I’m going to prefer the wider framing of the 14mm instead. I think this lens is fast enough for dark shooting (nights and indoors) and is plenty sharp. If I only had one lens I could take along with me, this one would be it. My only gripe is that you need to get a little creative with your framing but that can be a good learning experience.

I also take my two favorite Rokkors. I’ve gone through quite a few Rokkors and I’ve settle on these two so far. Of the ones I’ve tried on the GF1: 35mm F2.0, 28mm F2.0, 50mm F1.7, 50mm F1.4, 20mm F2.8. I think the two 50mm Lenses I tried are very good, you get most of the F1.2 will give you and at a much cheaper price. I got lucky with what I paid for my F1.2, but typically expect to pay up to 400 dollars for a good example. I have gotten some great shots with my 50mm F1.2. This lens is super fast, allows you to get some great shots in both light and dark areas and has excellent bokeh that you can dial down by raising your F setting. One lens that is always in my camera bag. The other lens I kept is a 135mm F3.5. There are a few faster 135mm Rokkors, but this is the only onve I’ve tried and I have been very happy with it. It’s my outdoor “telephoto” lens that I use to take those long distance shots of unsuspecting subjects. Excellent bokeh for such a not so fast lens.

Panasonic DMC-GF2

The Panasonic GF2 has just been announced to be on sale as early as January 2011. Improvements to the already small and excellent GF1 include a reduction in size of 19% and about a 7% drop in weight. Much of the same feel and classic look for the GF1 remain. The new GF2 will now be able to take full High Definition video at 1080P/30 and 1080i/60 in the AVHCD format. The screen is now touchscreen allowing faster and easier access to the menus. It will also be compatible with Panasonics upcoming 3D lens that will allow photographing and video in 3D. Looks like my GF1 will soon be for sale as I will definitely be upgrading my camera. DPReview.com has a complete hands on preview of the upcoming GF2.
